Cheap Vinyl Flooring

Cheap vinyl flooring is one of the most affordable ways to give a kitchen, bathroom or hallway a new water-resistant floor, and good affordable luxury vinyl can look smart and last for years. The secret is knowing which features matter for your room and which you can do without, so a low price means good value, not a floor you will replace in a year.

This page gathers the most affordable floors across our vinyl flooring range: wood-effect planks in oak and grey tones, stone and tile effects, and quick self-adhesive tiles for small rooms. Click vinyl saves on fitting because you can lay it yourself, and floors with underlay attached save buying a separate underlay.

How to get good value from affordable vinyl

Where a lower price makes little difference

Thickness in quiet rooms: a thinner plank is fine in a bedroom or spare room on a flat subfloor. Popular colours: natural oak, grey and white looks are made in large quantities, so they are often the most affordable. Standard plank sizes: cost less than extra-wide or extra-long planks and look just as good in most rooms.

Where it is worth spending a little more

Wear layer: the clear top layer decides how long the floor keeps its looks. Around 0.3mm suits quiet rooms; for kitchens, hallways, pets and children, a wear layer of about 0.5mm lasts much longer and is usually the better buy. Rigid core: SPC click vinyl bridges small bumps in the subfloor, which can save on floor preparation. Underlay: the right thin, firm underlay (or one attached) protects the click joints.

Which type of cheap vinyl?

Click vinyl: the best all-round value for most homes: quick to lay yourself, forgiving of the subfloor and easy to lift later. Glue-down vinyl: very hard-wearing for its price, but needs a smooth subfloor and usually a professional fitter, so the total cost can be higher. Self-adhesive tiles: the lowest-cost update for a small, dry room such as a cloakroom, but the least durable.

How to spot good affordable vinyl

  • A clear wear layer figure on the product page.
  • Embossed texture that follows the printed grain or stone.
  • Several different plank designs, so repeats are not obvious.
  • A firm, snug click joint (for click vinyl).

Order free samples of two or three affordable floors and compare them side by side in the room; texture and colour are much easier to judge in person.

Saving on fitting

Click vinyl cuts with a sharp knife and clicks together, so many people lay it themselves. Make sure the subfloor is clean, dry and flat, use a thin, firm LVT underlay unless one is attached, leave the small expansion gap the product asks for, and finish with scotia beading. Order about 5% extra for cutting waste so you do not run short; our measuring guide shows how. Our installation guides walk you through each step.

Affordable vinyl room by room

Kitchens and hallways: click vinyl with a 0.5mm wear layer. Bathrooms: click or glue-down vinyl with the edges sealed. Bedrooms: a thinner plank on a good underlay. Rented homes: hard-wearing click vinyl in a neutral wood look that can be lifted later.

Making a budget floor last

Door mats without a rubber backing, felt pads under furniture and regular sweeping matter more than the price. Clean with a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner; avoid bleach, solvents and steam mops.

Common mistakes with budget vinyl

  • Choosing the thinnest wear layer for a kitchen or hallway, where it wears quickly.
  • Laying click vinyl on a thick, soft laminate underlay, which breaks the joints.
  • Skipping subfloor preparation: vinyl shows every bump beneath it.

Vinyl that is cheap to buy but needs replacing early is not good value; a slightly thicker wear layer in the busiest rooms usually pays for itself.
