Brushed and oiled engineered oak flooring combines two finishes that bring out the natural beauty of oak. Brushing removes the softer wood between the grain, leaving the harder grain slightly raised, so the floor has a tactile, textured surface; oiling then soaks into that open grain, deepening the colour and giving a matt, natural finish. The result looks and feels like real, living wood, and the texture hides everyday scratches beautifully.
Brushed oak flooring comes in natural, white-oiled, smoked and grey tones, in rustic and natural grades and standard or wide planks. Because it is oiled, scratches and worn areas can be repaired locally without sanding the whole floor. What brushing does
Oak has hard and soft growth rings. A wire brush removes some of the softer wood, leaving the harder grain standing slightly proud. This gives the surface a gentle texture you can feel, makes the grain more visible, gives better grip underfoot and helps hide light scratches and wear, because marks blend into the texture.
What oiling does
Oil soaks into the wood and hardens in the grain rather than forming a film on top. On a brushed surface it sinks deeper into the opened grain, deepening the colour and giving a soft, matt, natural finish. Oiled floors can be spot-repaired, and they are refreshed with a maintenance oil rather than re-coated.
Brushed and oiled or brushed and lacquered?
Oiled: the most natural look and feel; easy to repair locally; needs regular maintenance oiling, more often in busy walkways. Lacquered: a sealed surface that resists spills best and needs little maintenance; deep scratches and worn walkways are renewed by re-coating larger areas.
How to choose
Tone
Natural oil: warm honey oak. White oil: soft, pale Scandi. Smoked: rich browns. Grey: calm and modern. Brushing makes every tone look a little deeper and richer.
Grade
Rustic brushed oak is the most characterful and forgiving; natural grade balances character and calm.
Construction
Check the top layer depth, board thickness and whether the board is approved for underfloor heating.
Caring for a brushed and oiled floor
- Vacuum with a soft brush head, which lifts grit from the texture.
- Clean with a well-wrung mop and a pH-neutral cleaner made for oiled wood.
- Re-oil when the wood looks dry or pale, or water stops beading; walkways may need it once or twice a year.
- Spot-repair scratches with a little oil, worked along the grain.
- Never use a steam mop, bleach or polish.
Brushed and oiled oak room by room
Living rooms and bedrooms: ideal; light maintenance and a warm, tactile floor. Hallways: beautiful and forgiving, with more frequent oiling in the walkway. Kitchens: possible with prompt wiping and regular maintenance near the sink. Homes with dogs: the texture hides claw marks. Bathrooms: never real wood.
Fitting brushed and oiled engineered oak
Acclimatise the boards, check concrete with a moisture meter, and float the boards over an engineered wood flooring underlay or glue them with a wood floor adhesive. Many makers recommend a first maintenance coat soon after fitting. Our installation guides explain each method.
Living with a brushed and oiled floor
A brushed and oiled floor ages gracefully: walkways become slightly smoother and softer in sheen over time, and a maintenance coat brings back an even look. Small scratches blend into the texture, and deeper ones can be repaired locally with a light sand and a little oil. Many owners find the floor looks better after a few years, with a gentle patina that a lacquered floor does not develop.
Comparing samples at home
Order free samples of two or three options and put them on the floor of the room where they will be laid. Look at them in daylight and in the evening under your own lamps, next to the walls, skirting, units and furniture they will sit with. Colours and textures look different in every room and on every screen, so a few minutes with real samples is the best way to avoid a costly mistake. Stand back as well as looking close up: a floor is mostly seen from standing height and from the doorway.
Common mistakes
- A cleaner for lacquered floors, which can leave a film.
- A clear oil on a white- or grey-oiled floor.
- Letting walkways dry out before re-oiling.
